Eye floaters are small, moving spots that appear in your field of vision. They can be transparent, semi-transparent, or solid and can take on various shapes, such as dots, circles, lines, or cobwebs. They look like they are floating around in your eye, and they move when you move your eyes.

Floaters are usually caused by changes in the vitreous, a gel-like substance that fills the inside of the eye. As we age, the vitreous tends to become more liquid, and the collagen fibres within it can clump together and cast shadows on the retina, which we see as floaters.

Floaters are common and usually harmless. Everyone has a small number of eye floaters, but most people don’t notice them because they are usually small and not very noticeable. Sometimes, though, people can see more eye floaters than usual, especially if they are looking at a bright, plain background like a blank wall or the sky. Occasionally they can be annoying or distracting. This can happen if you have a condition called posterior vitreous detachment, which is when the vitreous pulls away separates from the retina.

In some cases, floaters can be a sign of a more serious problem, such as a retinal detachment or retinal tear, which requires prompt medical attention. If you notice a sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light, or if you experience vision loss or changes in your vision, you should see an eye doctor right away.

In most cases, floaters do not require treatment. However, if floaters are particularly bothersome or obstruct your vision, your eye doctor may recommend a procedure called vitrectomy, which involves removing the vitreous and replacing it with a clear fluid. With this surgery vast majority of floaters are removed. Vitrectomy for floaters is done in very selected number of patients where floaters are very large and cause serious obstruction to the vision of the patient.
